The iRobot Roomba 980, the latest in a series of top-of-the-line robot vacuums, is a must for any modern home. This model is extremely powerful suction as well as an HEPA filter that can aid anyone who is concerned about allergies. It also comes with a large battery that can clean for two hours, and return to its dock automatically when the bin is full.
Smart mapping is another feature that allows it to identify areas of your home that require attention and provides a path for cleaning around them. We've seen this technology in action and it does an excellent job of maneuvering around toys that have been placed on the floor, or furniture legs that are sticking out of the ground. It also has a sensor that snaps Roomba to reality if it starts to move away from its original location.

The Roomba 980 is distinguished from other high-end models due to its latest dirt detection feature that makes use of cameras to identify dirt that has been embedded. This is a great improvement over the previous version, that relied on the sensor-driven pseudorandom coverage technique to bounce around the room and clean it at minimum three times from various angles.
The Roomba 980 performed well in our tests on both carpets and hard floors. Its score on the low pile carpet was impressive, and it also scored a high score on mid pile too. It was successful in getting rid of pet hair, but struggled with long and thick pet hair that was stuck together.
The Roomba 980 is still one of the top performing robots we've reviewed, despite these minor limitations. It's also less expensive than other top-of the-line models. It comes with many of the features you'd expect from a flagship model, but it doesn't have all the fancy apps or smart home integrations you'll get from other top models.
The iRobot Roomba is simple to set up and start up and running immediately. After taking the yellow bin insert and the battery pull tab from the undercarriage, you simply plug it into a wall socket or its Home Base docking stations, click the "Clean button" and let it do its job. It will automatically return to docking station when it runs out of battery or becomes full of trash. There are also indicator lights on top that show when its bin is empty, when it is in need of recharging or when it loses its Wi-Fi.
